Description
Banksia Pod Scales – Banksia Grandis
Stabilized
Banksia is a genus of around 170 species in the plant family Proteaceae. These Australian wildflowers and popular garden plants are easily recognised by their characteristic flower spikes and fruiting “cones” and heads. When it comes to size, banksias range from prostrate woody shrubs to trees up to 30 metres tall. They are generally found in a wide variety of landscapes; sclerophyll forest, (occasionally) rainforest, shrubland, and some more arid landscapes, though not in Australia’s deserts.
The large “cones” or seed pods of B. grandis are used for woodturning projects. They are also sliced up and sold as drink coasters; these are generally marketed as souvenirs for international tourists. Woodturners throughout the world value Banksia pods for making ornamental objects.
The epoxy used to cast these blanks is specially formulated for casting wood or wood like objects/pieces. It is very durable, with almost no shrinkage ( 0.001% ). It is FDA approved,UV stable and can take a high gloss finish if buffed correctly.
PLEASE NOTE: ALTHOUGH STABILIZED, BURL/WOODS CAN HAVE VOIDS, INCLUSIONS, CHECKING/CRACKING AND OTHER NATURAL CHALLENGES. THE STABILIZING RESIN IS NOT A FILLER RESIN, IN CASE YOU COME ACROSS SMALL VOIDS, INCLUSIONS, ETC. IT CAN EASILY BE REPAIRED AND FADED IN WITH THIN SUPERGLUE AND SANDING DUST OF THE SAME SPECIES.
